Is Jake Delhomme going to return to the Carolina Panthers in 2011? I remember when sports writers made fun of Jon Gruden, the then head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the way he liked to collect quarterbacks. If the Panthers bring back Jake Delhomme, they might have enough signal callers on their roster to make Jon Gruden jealous and make Steve Spurrier to hit the fax machine and start submitting plays for the Panthers offense.
A report on ProFootballTalk last night stated that Jake Delhomme’s days in Cleveland are likely numbered. Yes, and the sun is hot. The 36 year-old quarterback is due $5.4 million in 2011 and has been less than effective on the field for two seasons now. He does not figure into the Cleveland Browns future plans but it seems as if a former Carolina Panthers teammate wants to bring the veteran back to Carolina.
C Ryan Kalil has taken to Twitter to start lobbying for the Panthers to bring Delhomme back to Carolina. The center sent out some Tweets asking for the Panthers to bring Delhomme back and then sent this message out, quoting head coach Ron Rivera and adding the Twitter hashtag, #BringJakeBack.
I could not imagine the Carolina Panthers bringing back Jake Delhomme next season. Where would he fit? According to the current Panthers roster, there are six quarterbacks listed. What happens to Jimmy Clausen? Matt Moore? Keith Null? Tony Pike? Brian St. Pierre?
I imagine that Carolina could keep Cam Newton along with Jimmy Clausen and then add Jake Delhomme. but for what reason? To instruct young quarterbacks on how to turn the ball over? Jake Delhomme is one of the classist guys in the NFL and an all-around great guy, but he has nothing left in the tank. His productive seasons of 2004-2005 are well behind him. Over the past two seasons, Delhomme has thrown 10 touchdowns, 25 interceptions and lost 6 fumbles in regular season play.
Jake Delhomme is not a quarterback you want to come in and have mentor two young quarterbacks like Jimmy Clausen and Cam Newton that have enough question marks surrounding themselves already.

Signing Jake cheap might not be a bad move. The team needs a veteran presence at QB. Granted, it’s been awhile since Delhomme has been effective… but just because he struggles to get it done on the field physically does not mean he doesn’t know the nuts and bolts of the position. Plus, he led the team to it’s only Super Bowl and two Championship Games. In other words, been there, done that, got the t-shirt.
Plus, the too many QB’s argument is facetious. For one, Matt Moore is not under contract. For two, are any of the other names listed worthy of mentoring the franchise QB of the future? And then there’s this… sooner or later, Clausen has to go if Newton is your go-to guy.
It may seem off the wall, but signing Jake Delhomme to an affordable contract is far from the dumbest idea ever floated around the Panthers.
Jake was the best in the Panther’s
SuperBowl year, the best NFL QB.
He made gold from lead. Those
games were beautiful.
Since when did you turn into Jake? How can you sit there and talk crap about something you dont know?! Im so sick of you reporters saying crap like “he’s got nothing left in the tank”!! You base your opinion on, honestly, one bad season!! Give the man a break already!!!
