Michael Vick has won BET’s Subway Sportsman of the Year award and that has caused quite a stir among dog owners on the Internet. Dogster.com has launched a petition of the popular restaurant chain, Subway. The Facebook site, NO WAY Subway is now sporting over 9,000 Likes and has launched an online peition for people to sign boycotting the sandwich chain.

To be clear, Michael Vick is not a spokesperson for Subway, he won an award which is sponsored by the food chain that was awarded by a cable television channel. Fans on the Facebook page are posting the Subway customer service phone numbers and are urging people to call and complain. The activists are threatening to boycott the restaurant until Michael Vick returns his award.

I seriously doubt that Subway had any knowledge in advance of who would be given this award, the sponsorship of the award was likely done well in advance of the cable network’s knowledge of who would even be nominated. I am a huge animal lover, but I think this petition drive is misguided.

Vick beat out LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony and Derrick Rose to win the award.

While Subway did not choose the winner of this award, they do know now who they are sponsoring. They should revoke their sponsorship and take a stand if they care at all about the welfare of animals.

Subway is not “sponsoring” Mike Vick. The sponsorship of this event is nothing different than the Allstate Orange Bowl or the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Nothing less.

They knew the choices, they made there decision. They should have dropped out when the 5 nominees were made.

I “seriously doubt” you have any idea what you’re talking about.
I spent a dozen years at MLB and then NHL corporate – of COURSE the sponsors know everything in advance. And if even if they didn’t (which they did), even my 10-year-old could see Vick winning was a possibility. Subway chose the side they thought to be most lucrative. Epic Fail.

You seriously want to go there? Anyone online can claim they worked corporate for professional franchises on a message board. Sponsorship for events like these are secured well in advance of the event, there is no way that Subway knew anything about the nominees for the award.

I “seriously will go there!” I don’t care if you believe me or not. Let’s say I’m just a big fat liar. Of COURSE Subway knew. And if they didn’t and had even a tiny set of testicles, they’d immediately put a PR team into motion separating themselves from this monster.

Misguided? Seriously? I understand that Subway didn’t know before-hand who would win the award. The point is, now they do, and to allow their name to continually be paired with Michael Vick’s makes them responsible for touting his award. Money talks, and let me tell you, dog lovers have a lot of money, that they will NO LONGER be spending at Subway because of their lack of reaction to this issue.

Seriously? At the end of the day, how much weight does the BET Subway Sportsman of the Year hold? It’s not a Super Bowl trophy. It’s not the Heisman trophy. If you decide to move on from Subway, that’s fine, I don’t eat there.

And before all the Vick-lovers start spouting about something they know nothing about – I urge everyone to read the facts and THEN make a decision on what you feel is right or wrong. http://chrisdurant2000.wordpress.com/2011/01/02/michael-vick-was-wrongly-convicted/

Please, Subway knew who the nominees were! Subway sponsors this award in exchange for publicity and each time they run it they run the risk of appearing to condone the winning sports figure’s personal behavior. This time they lost the gamble. Now they’re faced with an ugly PR problem and likely a big drop in sales. Their response so far has been disingenuous and cowardly — even more reason not to do business with them.

Mr. Schmidt, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. We who not only love but also respect animals disagree, and will no longer patronize Subway. (And given this list of talented contenders, what on Earth was BET thinking by giving the award to Sick Vick?)

Did you happen to read my entire post? I am an animal owner, lover and respectful of all animals. I have a 13 pound Bengal cat that gets more care than some children.

TO BE CLEAR — The NO WAY Subway page has never stated he was a spokesman!! But SUBWAY IS responsible for anything it associates it’s name with!! They should have thought this out before even sponsoring such an award!!!

  9. avatar Dan

Subway may not have known in advance but they know now about BET’s pathetic choice of who got the award. So yes the pressure is on Subway to step up and denounce their support for the award and who it was given to….namely an animal abuser/killer/felon. As a good corporate citizen Subway should be leading the charge against BET’s choice. If Subway wants to be silent then animal lovers across the world will show Subway their displeasure by hitting them in the pocket book.

Dan, I do not eat at Subway and I am not a spokesperson for the company.

It may be true that Subway does not know who the winner is until after the award, but they have the ability to change the decision, I have no doubt. If you are going to put your brand name on something, be sure it has integrity. Further, it’s not whether vick is a good athlete or not, it’s more the way he has been glorified after doing jail time for such heinous acts. Just because the crimes were against dogs doesn’t make it ok. He is a cruel, violent person who has now become a hero. That is what I personally object to.

    • avatar FGreen

Of COURSE Subway knew!! It’s Business 101. What global company is going to spend millions of dollars on a project signed off on by dozens of executives on a luck-of-the-draw crap shoot?!

  11. avatar Maggie Corchnoy

Subway knew their name would be associated with whoever won the award. That’s the reason they sponsored it in the first place. If they were so abyssmally stupid as to give a third party the power to associate their brand with someone without having any sort of veto power, it’s hard to feel any sympathy for them. If Subway wants to get itself out of this mess, they need to publically disassociate themselves from that psychopath Vick & this award. Until they do that, this is one family of Subway regulars who will now be boycotting them.

No one begrudges Vick his ‘second chance’ but winning an award for sportsmanship, c’mon. It’s like giving Adolf Hitler a Humanitarian Award. You can’t be farther from a good sport than Vick is.

Time Magazine awarded Adolf Hitler the “Man of the Year” award in 1938.

I am disgusted at BET’s choice to award Michael Vick (and Chris Brown but that’s a whole other issue). Subway knew who the nominees were ahead of time, any reasonable person would be able to see that there was a possibility that Mike would win. Once Subway knew he was nominated they should have retracted their support, even now that he has won they should retract their support. Obviously there are contracts involved, however, they can publicly apologize and donate money to animal related agencies. I agree BET is more to blame than Subway is but they are definitely not innocent victims in this. Subway endorsed the BET award, Michael Vick won the BET award. That means that they endorse Vick. If A=B and B=C, than sorry but A also equals C. Michael Vick did not serve one day in jail for beating, torturing, electrocuting, drowning, hanging, and killing many dogs. He was sent to jail for racketeering. He is not sorry for his horrific deeds, he is sorry he got caught. Even if Subway was completely innocent, not knowing what you are endorsing is an awful business practice… Subway just has to learn the hard way.

The most heinous act involves BET for nominating (and, of course, subsequently electing) Vick for this “honor.” These cretins are the ones that should be getting the heat as they have shown themselves to be slime; single-cell organisms; amoebae in a black world that, for some reason, holds its collective breath in fervor for “who will win” this “award.” Could they have not put forward an Hispanic, Caucasian, etc. instead of all blacks? Just because it is the “Black Ent. Ntwk.” does not justify such a racist list. It should involve EVERY athlete; surely there are more deserving athletes that could be considered that aren’t black, and certainly moreso than Vick. The award is NOT for the “Black Sportsman of the Year”; it is for the “Sportsman of the Year” so why are only blacks considered?!? And a crud like Vick, at that! BTW, Eric — is a 13 pound cat a healthy cat? Sounds like he’s been eating dug-up dog @ Che Vick.

“Sportsman” of the Year is truly ironic.
Vick did not make a “mistake”, other than getting caught.
He personally electrocuted, drowned, bludgeoned and slammed dogs heads into concrete until their agonizing screams were silenced by death. He did this mainly because the dogs were poor fighters or didn’t want to fight at all. He’s a sociopath. Sociopaths are incapable of remorse.
I don’t expect anything from the BET, but, I was surprised that Subway would look the other way. I worked in marketing for a large company and they know exactly where the marketing $$$s are going and what they are sponsoring.

Decent Americans Unite…Say NO to SUBWAY, NIKE, the PHILADELPHIA EAGLES, The NFL, the BET and SATAN’s SERVANT MICHAEL VICK!!!

  19. avatar danny

What is wrong with everyone? The man,Vick, made a terrible mistake and has already paid for it, still is. Yes, what he did was wrong but you people are treating him as if he still does it. Are you perfect? You NEVER made a bad choice in life?
Vick got the award for his efforts, not for abusing dogs. Forgive and move on already.
I can only hope that one of you fanatics get caught making a mistake in life and be labled and shunned the rest of your life as well, even though you may have already paid your pennance. Hypocritic fools.

  20. avatar Garrett

“Forgive and move on already”…Really?! I hate to be the one to break it to ya, Danny, but that’s not going to happen! If one of us “fanatics” gets caught abusing, fighting or killing an animal (I believe you referred to that as a “mistake”) then I hope we would be shunned for the rest of our lives…as well one should be. IMHO, there is no pennance high enough for him to pay to unsoil his name or reputation in the eyes of someone who truly loves animals. God help him if he’s ever on fire and I’m the only one around. Rest assured I will not be able to gather up any spit in my mouth to put him out. My dog, however, MIGHT just pee on him a little bit.
