Southhampton Academy in Virginia has a secret weapon on their defense, eighth grader, Mina Johnson. Johnson, 5’2″ 170 pound defensive tackle is one of the few girls playing football across the country. However, her team’s opponent, Northeast Academy, threatened to forfeit their game unless Johnson sat out. Johnson caved and sat out the game.

Another upcoming opponent, the Word of God Christian Academy is also threatening a forfeit if Johnson decides to play in the October 27th contest. Neither the coach or headmaster of either school returned calls explain their decisions to Tidewaternews.com.

Johnson’s coach, Brian Parker says Johnson is a model player. “During conditioning, I often refer to Mina as an example to the team of how to hustle and work hard on the field. She really does deserve to play.” Johnson recorded 4 sacks on September 22. She is also currently a member of the school’s honor role.

Johnson told reporters that she was inspired to play football after being teased by her older brother.

I think this is one of the most ridiculous stories I’ve read in a while. Why not play against her? Why penalize the players on your team by taking a forfeit. Ms Johnson obviously doesn’t have any problem playing against the boys, and according to her coach, she is very good at her position. And the fact that neither coaches or headmasters returned calls to the local paper which covered this story, show exactly how shallow thinking some people are.
