QB Ben Roethlisberger sat out the Pittsburgh Steelers game last week against the St. Louis Rams, but despite his current injury, he wants to play this week against the Cleveland Browns. No one can question Ben Roethlisberger’s toughness, but playing this week against the Cleveland Browns should not be an option for the Steelers despite what the quarterback tells reporters.
This afternoon, Roethlisberger told the media on his way to the practice field, “I’m going to give it a go today. It (his ankle) got a little better every day, no set backs. We’ll give ‘er a shot today and see how it feels”. When asked about the possibility of playing Sunday, Roethlisberger responded, “I’d like to play just because I like being out there. I don’t know that I necessarily need it, it’d be nice to get another week of rest, but I prefer to play”.
Roethlisberger did indeed practice and second-string QB Charlie Batch took snaps as well.Batch will get the starting nod if Roethlisberger is unable to go.
Personally, I see no reason for Roethlisberger to play at all against the Steelers as they might wind up with the fifth seed in the AFC playoffs even if they defeat the Cleveland Browns and the Baltimore Ravens defeat the Cincinnati Bengals. As a wildcard team, the Steelers will have to play the following weekend. Pittsburgh needs a healthy Ben Roethlisberger to advance in the playoffs.
Roethlisberger played the entire Steelers game against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night, December 19th and his injury was evident as he played with little mobility and took a beating at the hands of the Niners defense.
