The New England Patriots need help at wide receiver. Stevie Johnson may need a new team. While it sounds great on paper, this is not a good fit at all, especially for the Patriots.
Then again, it isn’t the ideal fit for Johnson either.
I wrote earlier if the Patriots would consider signing Randy Moss, Reggie Wayne or Brandon Lloyd. I mentioned those three names because I felt as if they made the most sense. Johnson did not cross my mind.
While Albert Breer of the NFL Network tweeted that the Pats signing Johnson would make sense for three reasons, I just don’t see the two being right for each other in any way.
Yes, Johnson destroyed the Patriots last season. Sure, he gives Darrelle Revis of the New York Jets fits. And alright, he is a vertical threat. But you forgot about one other thing.
He is bat crap crazy.
The Buffalo Bills are currently “far apart” in negotiations with Johnson, which should come as no great surprise. While his talent level cannot be questioned, his maturity and intelligence often come into question, and he seemingly does not learn from his prior mistakes, whether it is costing the team wins and yards, or himself money in fines. Some things just don’t change.
Those things also include the “Patriots way.” Even at just 26, Johnson may be entering the prime of his NFL career. But his on field antics would not sit well in Foxboro with owner Robert Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick. Throw in the fact that Tom Brady spreads the ball around as well as any other quarterback, Johnson may often find himself playing the role of decoy on more plays than he would like.
It could cause an almost immediate rift, and that is a risk that the Patriots simply will not consider taking.
