There were conflicting reports this weekend regarding whether or not the St. Louis Rams would place the franchise tag on WR Brandon Lloyd. According to Jason LaCanfora at the NFL Network, the Rams will not place the franchise tag on Brandon Lloyd. This move will allow Lloyd to enter the free agent market, fueling speculation about the receiver joining the New England Patriots in 2012.

LaCanfora reports that the St. Louis Rams, according to his sources will not be using the franchise tag this offseason on any player. Lloyd was the Rams leading receiver in 2011, but he joined the team after the regular season started and struggled along with the rest of the Rams offense last season. The reciever recorded just 683 yards, five scores while catching just 51 passes.

WR Brandon Lloyd has drifted around the NFL in his career, joining his fifth team this season in nine seasons. Lloyd will turn 31 this offseason and the speculation of him joining the New England Patriots has been fueled by the fact his former head coach Josh McDaniels has now rejoined the New England Patriots. Wide receiver is a position the Patriots are going to have to address this offseason, with the team needing an outside threat.

McDaniels was able to resurrect Lloyd’s career in Denver, with the pass catcher recording career high numbers across the board. 77 receptions, 1,448 yards, 11 scores and 18.8 yards per reception while catching passes from Kyle Orton in 2010.

Given the situation surrounding WR Wes Welker and the team likely to part ways with Chad Ochocinco and Deion Branch, a reunion between Brandon Lloyd and Josh McDaniels seems to make perfect sense.

I’m with you rj..Why not? The only thing I can figure is the money.. Is he worth what the avg. top 5 WR’s make in the NFL? Maybe Fisher has his eyes on a FA that they will have to pay big bucks too, Let’s hope so!!!

This is stupid! Even if they aren’t going to franchise him, they could at least make an effort to keep him around because he is better than a lot of the butter-fingered receivers they’ve had the last couple years. Actually until Lloyd came along I thought Steven Jackson was their most reliable receiver. Not good when your best receiver is a running back. Stupid personnel decisions…I guess some things really never do change. Or as the 49ers used to say, “Same old Rams.”
