The New England Patriots have announced this afternoon that they have signed a new wide receiver, and it’s was not the reported signing of WR Brandon Lloyd heading into this weekend. The Patriots official website released the announcement this afternoon that the organization has signed former Indianapolis Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez. No terms of the agreement have been released by the Patriots at this time.
This had to be a typical low-cost high reward style of contract by the Patriots. Gonzalez had a promising future at one point in his career but has appeared in less than a dozen games since the 2008 season due to a never ending string on injuries.
The signing of Gonzalez should not soften the market for Brandon Lloyd however as Gonzalez would have a difficult time cracking the current Patriots starting lineup and still needs to prove that he can remain healthy for a full season. The player this might jeopardize a possible signing with New England though is Danny Amendola.
It was rumored by several sources but neither confirmed or denied by the Patriots organization that restricted free agent WR Danny Amendola was spotted at the Patriots practice facility earlier this week. A signing of Amendola would cost the Patriots their second-round draft pick in next month’s NFL Draft.
