As we head into the last two weeks before the 2012 NFL Draft, rumors are flying and one team at the center of many of those rumors are the Cleveland Browns. The Browns have made little noise in free agency and despite the potential of adding some offensive playmakers, Cleveland has done precious little this offseason. Many discussions in the past weeks have centered around the possibility of the Cleveland Browns possibly selecting QB Ryan Tannehill, but perhaps the discussions have been misguided.
If the Browns would select Tannehill at number four overall, then that basically spells the end of Colt McCoy. Why not give McCoy a chance to succeed with some offensive weapons for a chance. Why not select WR Justin Blackmon at number four overall? And quite simply, why not inquire about the asking price of RB Matt Forte from the Chicago Bears? The Browns are loaded with early round draft choices.
Cleveland wants to run a West Coast offense, why not bring in a running back which can catch the ball out of the backfield? Forte has never recorded less than 50 receptions in his career. He is upset with the Bears for not offering him a long-term deal and slapping him with the franchise tag. He has no immediate plans of signing his tender offer anytime soon and nearly held out at the start of last season. Forte is also disgruntled about the fact that the Bears inked a free agent deal with RB Michael Bush.
Forte will turn 27 in December of this year. Would Browns fans be willing to surrender a second and perhaps fourth-round pick this year in order to trade for him if that would be the asking price? Forte is not the power back that Peyton Hillis was, but he has collected over 6,000 total yards in four years and would fit the Browns system very nicely. Additionally, he played outdoors in Chicago, so he can play in the weather in Cleveland.
There are no overtures or rumors currently that the Bears are willing to move Forte but as the draft inches closer and if he continues to refuse to sign his tender offer, the frugal Bears might simply decide to move Forte with Michael Bush on the roster.
