The St. Louis Rams will be without defensive coordinator Greg Williams this season but that hasn’t stopped head coach Jeff Fisher from trying to raise the bar for the team’s defense. According to CBSSports.com, Fisher has challenged the 2012 St. Louis Rams to break the current NFL single season sack record, currently held by the 1984 Chicago Bears. The Bears recorded 72 takedowns in 1984.
The Rams only logged 39 sacks last season but they do have some good, young talent along the defensive front. Rookie Robert Quinn took the quarterback down five times last season while DE Chris Long is developing into a force, recording 13 sacks last season.
However, the Rams have seven rookies from the defensive line on their roster and simply don’t have the talent currently to effectively make a run at the all-time single season sack record. Before setting their sights on breaking the single season sack record, perhaps Jeff Fisher and the coaching staff should work on improving the overall record of a team which has gone 15-65 in the last five seasons.
