The Denver Broncos acquired a future Hall of Fame quarterback during free agency, adding Peyton Manning to the roster. The Broncos also believe they added their quarterback of the future in last month’s NFL Draft, QB Brock Osweiler. Speaking to over 6,000 season ticket holders on Tuesday, John Elway explained the reason for the selection of Osweiler, saying that the signal caller has tremendous upside potential and that the Broncos got great value at number 57 in the second round.
Elway, vice president of football operations, fielded 28 questions from season ticket holders. When asked about Osweiler, he responded, “It’s always tough to pick a quarterback that you know is not going to play for a while. But I think we have high hopes for him in the future to where once Peyton decides to hand them up that he’s our guy in waiting that can keep this (going) and we don’t miss a beat…and we can continue to compete for world championships year in and year out.”
There is no guarantee that Oweiler will become the quarterback of the future. He has serious flaws in his throwing motion but he does have a large frame, coming in at 6’8″. During his career at Arizona State, Osweiler threw for 4,036 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Elway continued, “It’s the perfect situation where there’s not the pressure for him to come in and start right away. He’s not ready for that. But he’s going to learn from Peyton and..I think it’s a great learning experience for him to where we are set in the future.”
