Former New York Giants LB Lawrence Taylor’s Super Bowl ring went up for auction this week leading many questions as why the NFL great would sell his ring. When questioned by reporters as to why Taylor would sell his ring, he stated he didn’t even know it was for sale. SCP Auctions currently has the ring on auction and bids will continue until 10 p.m. Saturday night.

Taylor’s agent¬† told reporters that he had given the ring to his son, Lawrence Taylor Jr. several years ago and he had no idea that his son was selling the ring. “Lawrence was in fact unaware of it. But he gave it to T.J. and it’s his right to do what he wants with it. He’s fine with whatever T.J. decided” said Mark Lepselter.

As if this story didn’t have enough twists and turns, the story headed a new direction early Saturday morning. Current New York Giants DE Osi Umenyiora took to Twitter this morning. Umenyiora wants to reach 1 million followers on Twitter and if he reaches that mark today, he will buy the ring off the auction site and return it to Taylor.

From Umenyiora’s Twitter account, “Attn: All LT, NYG, NFL FANS! If I get 1 million followers, i will buy LT’s ring back and give it to him. The 1,000,000th will give it to him” It will take a monumental feat for Umenyiora to reach 1 million prior to 10 p.m. tonight however. Umenyiora currently has 22,622 followers according to his Twitter page.

According to the New York Daily News, the current high bid for the Super Bowl ring is at $89,000 dollars.

Edit- Omenyiora has now reduced the number of Twitter followers to 500,000 this afternoon, perhaps after not generating the buzz he thought he would get after posting the announcement this morning. He still is well short of the half a million mark, currently at 41,201.
