An Arena football league player set fire to his bed Thursday, claiming God told him to do it. Kevin Ellison, a linebacker/defensive back for the Spokane Shock, is facing federal arson charges after telling authorities that God told him to set fire to his bed with a marijuana blunt, starting a fire which gutted his third floor apartment. Damage is estimated at $50,000.00.
Ellison told Spokane Valley Deputy Fire Marshall Clifton Mehaffey that he started the fire because God told him to set the bed on fire.
Ellison, a USC product, was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the 2009 NFL Draft. He was released in 2010 after nine starts for the Chargers when law enforcement officials found 100 Vicodin tablets without a perscription in his car during a traffic stop. Ellison joined the Seattle Seahawks but was released prior to the start of the 2010 NFL regular season.
Shock majority owner Brady Nelson told reporters that the investigation needs to play itself out but his future with the team is not assured. “I think the investigation needs to play out, but if he truly did this he’s never coming back.” Ellison remains in jail with a bail hearing scheduled for June 19.
