The Miami Dolphins added veteran receiver Chad Ochocinco to the roster shortly after the New England Patriots decided to release him The receiving corps of the Dolphins has been called into question, even after the addition of the 34-year old Chad Ochocinco. As the Miami Dolphins opened their last three-day minicamp of the offseason this afternoon, rookie head coach Joe Philbin told media members that there is no clear cut number one receiver on the Miami roster, especially surrounding Ochocinco. gets several media press releases from multiple NFL teams and the Dolphins happen to be one of those clubs. When asked this afternoon about Ochocinco’s role with the Dolphins, Philbin was veiled in his response.

(On whether Chad Ochocinco can be a number 1 receiver in this offense) – “We’ll have to see. I like the work ethic of the guys we have, I like the competitiveness, and I like the progress they’ve made. We’re obviously going to learn a lot more after we play a couple of games in terms of exactly where we are, and I think that sometimes there is a little misconception in this system in terms of having a number one receiver, number two receiver or number three receiver. We want all our guys to go out there and win one-on-one matchups against man-to-man coverage. But I’ll tell you that most of our pass game is based on a progression system where the quarterback can get the football out of his hands and not sit back there and take a lot of hits. We don’t design plays necessarily to a number one, two, or three guy. Now do we move receivers around? Sure, we put them up in the slot and outside and we motion them across the formation to get mismatches, absolutely. Whether he’s number one, two, or whatever, we’re going to look for the same things. We’re going to look for someone who go out and catch the ball the ball consistently, get open against man coverage, play the ball down the field, and block for his teammates. So how he (Ochocinco) fits that compared to everyone else will determine where he is.”

Philbin went on to state that Ochocinco’s personality has not been disruptive early on in the process and he expects him to assume a mentor role while with the club. The head coach also told the media not to read anything into the fact that veteran QB David Garrard is receiving the bulk of the snaps with the first team.
