Former Ohio State Heisman Trophy winning QB Troy Smith has been released by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith entered the league in the 2007 NFL Draft and was selected in the fifth-round by the Baltimore Ravens. He played three seasons with the Ravens before joining the San Francisco 49ers in 2010 and eventually played for the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL last season. Smith has appeared in 20 games during his NFL career and has eight starts.

The move to release Smith leaves the Steelers with four quarterbacks on their roster. Ben Roethlisberger, Byron Leftwich, Charlie Batch and rookie Jerrod Johnson comprise the signal callers remaining.

Smith led the Ohio State Buckeyes to a 12-0 season in 2006 but lost the national championship game to the University of Florida 41-14.
