The Detroit Lions have announced this afternoon that RB Jahvid Best will be placed on the team’s Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP). This move does not come as any sort of surprise, but at this point, one has to wonder if Best will ever return to the football field in his career.

The designation of adding Best to the PUP list now guarantees that he will not be able to hit the field until week eight. The running back, which was supposed to be the explosive playmaker in the Lions backfield, has been dealing with concussion symptoms since nearly the middle of last season.

Best told reporters this offseason that he felt good and expected to be ready to play this season, but he has not been cleared by a battery of independent physicians in order to return to the field this season. Kevin Smith will now assume the role of starter for the Lions. Smith himself has been injury prone in his career and he will be backed up by Keiland Williams.

The Lions will face a precarious running back situation with second-year back Mikel Leshoure set to start the season serving a two-game suspension.
