The New England Patriots have been on the cutting edge with their use of the two tight end sets in the last year. The offensive production that the team has received from Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez has been very impressive as teams have already to to replicate their success at the position. Rob Gronkowski had a record setting season and was rewarded with a six-year $54 million dollar contract extension. Aaron Hernandez just received his contract extension.
The Patriots have locked up Hernandez through the 2019 season with a reported $40 million dollar extension which has $16 million guaranteed and $12 million in the form of a signing bonus. New England has two of the most athletic tight ends in the league locked up for close to the remainder of this decade now for a nearly $100 million dollar investment.
The duo have not even hit their prime yet. Gronkowski is 23 while Hernanadez will turn 23 in November of this season. In addition to this tight end pairing, the Patriots have also added other assets at the position. Visanthe Shiancoe and Daniel Fells were signed via free agency while the Patriots claimed former New York Giants TE Jake Ballard off waivers over a month ago.
