After a last second loss to a bitter rival, I always expect the emotions of players on the losing team to be high. Then when you add to that with some terrible officiating, a costly penalty against you, and a 1-2 record, you end up with Brandon Spikes tweet.
After losing to the Baltimore Ravens on a game winning field goal, New England Patriots LB Brandon Spikes came out and tweeted ” Can someone please tell these f*****g zebras foot locker called and they’re needed Back at work !!!! #BreakingPoint” Now don’t get me wrong, I agree that these refs have been terrible, and should be nowhere near an NFL field. There were multiple blown calls in this game on both sides, and the replacement refs once again played a significant impact in the game with their blown calls, the problem I have here is with Brandon Spikes letting his emotions get the best of him,
Twitter has become a double edged sword for people in general, but especially professional athletes. While it is only 140 characters, just one little word can change the life or perception of that person. Herm Edwards has long been telling this same tale to athletes, that you should always check what you are about to say before you tweet it. That is the problem I have with Spikes tweet, I think while it was in the heat of the moment, it showed a lack of judgement and not being able to handle his emotions. Lastly, even if Spikes didn’t say the word “referees” I think he will be getting a letter from the NFL in the next few days asking him for some money.
