San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews was supposed to have a breakout season this year, but he now finds himself mired in a controversy with fellow team mate Jackie Battle. This offseason, Mathews was expected to be the Chargers featured back but he is now splitting carries with Battle and actually did not start last week when the Chargers took on the Kansas City Chiefs. This is yet another confounding move with frustrates fantasy football owners as they try to figure out which running back will start for the San Diego Chargers.

The Chargers have not named a starter for tonight’s game against the New Orleans Saints, but both players will likely see action. This is a favorable matchup for either player as the Saints are ranked 32nd against the run, allowing over 185 yards per game so far this season. Both Mathews and Battle had nearly identical carries last week.

Battle is the current rushing leader for the Chargers with 163 yards on 32 carries. His guady 5.1 yards per carry image is skewed by a 52 yard scamper. Mathews has only carried the ball 24 times this season for 105 yards. Battle has scored three times on the ground with Mathews yet to find the endzone this year.

It is reasonable to assume that at some point in coming weeks, Mathews will regain the starting role for the Chargers. However, Mathews fantasy owners should be aware that Jackie Battle could become the Chargers goal line back, filling the role that Mike Tolbert held for the Chargers in recent seasons. That move would significantly cut into Mathews fantasy value once again this season.
