According to police, a player from the Kansas City Chiefs has shot and killed his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself, fatally dying of a self inflicted gunshot wound. The incident allegedly took place Saturday morning at the team’s training facility, Kansas City Police Communications Supervisor Kathy Childs said.

The suicide took place at Arrowhead Stadium, where the Chiefs play, and the player shot himself in front of a “couple of coaches,” according to police. The shooting occured at 7:50 a.m. local time at the team’s facility near Arrowhead Stadium, Childs said. She said police know the name of the player, but declined to release his name since the shooting was still under investigation.

According to sources, the stadium was cordoned off as players started arriving and police told them one of their teammates had shot himself. Police also said another shooting off-site was linked to the shooting.

Following the tragic news, the Chiefs issued a statement.

“We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.”

More news will be released throughout the coming hours and days, including the name of the player involved. As of now, the NFL has told the Chiefs’ opponents this Sunday, the Carolina Panthers, to be ready to play their game as scheduled. That is a home game for Kansas City.

Stay tuned for more as information is released.
