The Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette reported on Tuesday a source told the newspaper that Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger would start on Sunday versus the San Diego Chargers. This afternoon, head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that Roethlisberger will be under center on Sunday against the Chargers. This is exceptional news for the Steelers that managed to pull off a win against the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday with the aging Charlie Batch under center.
Speaking to reporters and according to the Steelers official website, Tomlin did confirm that Roethlisberger will start but still has reservations about the Steelers quarterback and his ability to sustain a hit.
“He has been above the line in all areas. Really, the only question we can’t answer is taking a hit. Obviously that will be answered in the stadium on Sunday.”
Tomlin continued, “I am extremely comfortable with his ability to work the field both vertically and horizontally. He has great velocity on his ball. We’re ready to go to work.”
Roethlisberger is recovering from what was described as a “unique” shoulder and chest injury. Steelers backup quarterback Byron Leftwich is not expected to dress on Sunday so the venerable Charlie Batch will back up Roethlisberger.
