After initially saying that after Colin Kaepernick became the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, it felt as if “someone took the handcuffs off me,” tight end Vernon Davis is now saying that he and Kaepernick are not on the same page.

Of course, if you looked inside the numbers over the past few games, you could have figured that out for yourself.

“We don’t have it [chemistry],” Davis said, according to The Sacramento Bee. “You have to expect [that because] he just stepped in. Me and Alex — we’ve been there. It takes time. It took time for me and Alex to get like that. It’s like it’s starting all over again, especially for me.”

After catching six passes for 83 yards and a touchdown in Kaepernick’s first start in a 32-7 win against the Chicago Bears, things have quickly gone south again for Davis in a disappointing 2012 season. Since that game, Davis has combined for just four catches for 29 yards and no scores over the past four games with Kaepernick under center for the ‘Niners.

Of course, he had some inconsistent games even with Smith as the team’s starting quarterback in 2012, so it is not all just a lack of chemistry between he and Kaepernick. Davis has regressed after having a huge season in 2011 with San Francisco, culminating in a monster performance in a playoff win over the New Orleans Saints.

Aside from his earlier comments regarding the handcuffs being removed, Davis has been in the corner of Smith’s throughout his career. He and Kaepernick will have to figure out how to get on the same page with the postseason approaching, and Davis says he may understand the problem.

“In practice, he would overthrow me,” Davis said. “I think he’s just kind of scared on my speed a little bit. He doesn’t really know it. We don’t have that timing. It’ll come. Just like any quarterback and any wide receiver.”

Well, Vernon, you are a tight end. I’m not sure about Kaepernick being scared of your speed. I’m pretty sure that you are not the fastest offensive player on the 49ers, and Kaepernick has had little problem connecting with other players on the team.

I am starting to wonder if it may be something else.

No, he’s very likely the fastest player on that offense, save for the woman beater, LaMichael James, though he doesn’t really count because he just played his first game of the season. And he beats women.
