In about the mid-1990’s the political correctness police turned their sights on to professional and college sports. Team names and logos needed to be changed in order to avoid offending certain members of society became their battle cry. The Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, Florida State Seminoles and Washington Redskins among others, all became teams in their sights. The Braves and Seminoles fans were under fire for their use of the Tomahawk Chop chant from the crowds. The Indians mascot was criticized while the calls started about changing the name of the Washington Redskins.
This debate in Washington by certain members of the community will simply not go away and now the mayor of the District of Columbia suggests if the Redskins ever want to play football in the district ever again, it’s time for the team to consider a name change. Because, after all, there really is nothing more important to worry about in Washington.
The Washington Post reports Mayor Vincent Gray as stating that a dialogue of a name change would be part of any deal to get the Redskins back to D.C. “I think that if they are serious with the team coming back to Washington, there’s no doubt there’s going to have to be a discussion about that. And of course, the team is going to have to work with us around those issues.”
Back in October, the Washington City Paper, a publication that has had a running feud with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, officially stopped using the teams name and started referring to them as the Washington Pigskins. Pigskins was adopted as the result of an online poll conducted by readers.
One Washington writer blamed the injury suffered to QB Robert Griffin III as a result of karma because of the Redskins team name. Seriously. Courtland Milloy suggests times are changing, progressive thinking is evolving and it’s time to move on from this racially charged nickname. If you want to waste your time, you can read his column here.Blaming karma over the team name and logo on Griffin’s injury. I don’t even know where to start with that one.
These members of the politically correct police force must stay up all hours of the night in order to think things up that they can meddle in. There is always hand wringing, gashing of teeth, great consternation over things. There is always a crisis, always some oppressed group that has been done an injustice. They must be great fun at parties. Everyone needs a hyphenated name of some sort. Traditions and holidays are always offensive in some way.
Explain to me exactly how a team name and logo change will alter the day to day lives of American Indians. It won’t. To be honest, I don’t think the vast majority of them care. They will still be paying an insane amount of money for groceries. Gasoline prices will remain the same and the monthly bills will continue to roll into the mailbox just like they do for everyone else living in America struggling day to day.
It’s really time for some discussion on things that really matter in this country.
