The Arizona Cardinals began the day as the last team in search of a new head coach. Eight NFL teams fired their head coaches from the 2012 season and the Cardinals named a replacement for dismissed Ken Whisenhunt. Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians was hired by the Cardinals on Thursday. Arians gained recognition this season while serving as the Colts interim head coach in Chuck Pagano’s absence.

Arians has a history of deep, vertical passing offenses and he is going to have to find a quarterback for the Cardinals. It is likely that the team will either pursue one through the draft on in free agency.

Yahoo! Sports is reporting this evening that the Cardinals and Arians will let defensive coordinator Ray Horton go and replace him with Todd Bowles. Bowles has experience running both 3-4 and 4-3 defensive schemes but has no head coaching experience.

Horton was interviewed for head coaching positions around the league. As coaching candidates were hired by other teams, the Cardinals denied requests from around the league to let him conduct further interviews. If dismissed as reported, Horton will have little problems finding work in the league.
