Heading into the playoffs, the San Francisco 49ers brought in free agent kicker Billy Cundiff to battle struggling placekicker David Akers. Cundiff was eventually released, but one has to wonder after last night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, if the Niners will bring Cundiff back as the team prepares for the Super Bowl.

Akers has struggled this season. After leading all kickers in 2011, he has lead the NFL in the most missed kicks. Akers has told reporters that his struggles are due in part to dealing with recovery from sports hernia surgery.

Akers had just one field goal attempt on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. He lined up for a 38-yard field goal attempt. The kick sailed off the the left and struck the top of the upright for a failed kick. San Francisco is headed to the Super Bowl to face the Baltimore Ravens and the game might come down to a field goal. Jim Harbaugh is going to have a tough decision to make in the coming weeks.

At the least, I’d expect Cundiff to be brought in for these two weeks leading up to the final game of the season.
