The Philadelphia Eagles announced this afternoon that veteran QB Michael Vick has restructured his contract and will be remaining in Philadelphia under center in 2013. No one might be more happier about this move than San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith. The Niners front office has to be ecstatic about this development as well.
Smith now clearly is the top quarterback in this year’s potential free agent class and now the leverage is clearly with the San Francisco 49ers. Even if teams might have balked about a potential trade for Smith while thinking that he might just be released outright, they are going to have to think again now.
Four teams could potentially be interested in Smith; Arizona, Cleveland, Kansas City and Buffalo. There is no doubt that one of these teams will offer up and intriguing trade offer for Smith. While he might not be the most dynamic quarterback in the league, he is accurate and has not turned the ball over much in his last two seasons.
Labeled a “game manager” his lack of turnovers is an asset and given the lack of other quarterback talent this season in both free agency and the 2013 NFL Draft, his skills will reap a very nice payday this offseason while he wears another team’s colors next season.
