The Buffalo Bills inked a deal with QB Kevin Kolb, a move which was made official yesterday. Kolb proclaimed that he signed with the Bills while having every intention of bringing a Super Bowl victory to the Bills. Whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen but the fact of the matter is that Kolb might have but just one season under center for the Bills to achieve his goal.
In his press conference yesterday, rookie head coach Doug Marrone spoke in regards to the Kolb signing and sounded as if Kolb is simply going to be a stop gap measure for Buffalo and signaled that the Bills might very well be targeting a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Marrone trotted out the same old, tired cliches when describing Kolb. He’s a competitor. He can make all the throws. We wanted to add someone to our roster that can compete. Yada. Yada. Yada.
When asked though whether or not the Kolb signing will alter the Bills plans in the draft, Marrone suggested that the Bills might very well draft another quarterback to go along with the three currently on the roster.
A: I do not think it really is going to change the philosophy on the draft. I think that when the position comes whatever is best for our team to get better I think we will go ahead and choose that player whoever it may be. I think that rather than trying to, and I do not want to speak for Buddy (Nix) or anyone else in the organization, rather than trying to reach or go somewhere that you do not want to go you bring the best players you can bring in and you make those guys compete. You are a better football team.
Kolb is simply a stop gap measure for Buffalo. He has limited starting experience and showed a penchant for getting bitten by the injury bug during his time in Arizona. Buffalo had little selection to choose from in a very limited free agency quarterback pool this year.
Buffalo released former starter Ryan Fitzpatrick at the start of free agency and had only Tarvaris Jackson on the roster with starting experience prior to signing Kolb. Rumors suggest that the Bills could be targeting Marrone’s former college quarterback, Ryan Nassib in the upcoming lottery.
