The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are planning on working out veteran running back Peyton Hillis today according to one source. Jenna Laine of Sports Talk Florida reported the news on Monday afternoon. The Buccaneers released CB Eric Wright on Monday after he failed a physical with the San Francisco 49ers. Wright had been traded to the Niners after the team learned of his DUI arrest earlier this month.
The workout of Hillis is a bit puzzling as the running back position for the Buccaneers appears to be set. Second year back Doug Martin will again be the workhorse of the team and Michael Smith has raised a few eyebrows during offseason workouts.
If the Buccaneers are planning on Hillis filling a fullback role, the team has Erik Lorig on the roster and acquired former Rutgers running back Brain Leonard this offseason. Perhaps this move by the Buccaneers is nothing more than wanting to see what the veteran back has in the tank in case of an injury this preseason.
EDIT: The Buccaneers are working out another veteran this afternoon. According to Jason LaCanfora on Twitter, Tampa will be looking at veteran TE Visanthe Shiancoe as well.
