The New England Patriots decided to let veteran WR Wes Welker to walk in free agency this season and replace him with Danny Amendola. Many have suggested that Amendola is a younger version of Welker. Both a slot receiver, tough as nails and both from Texas Tech. The disclaimer with Amendola was his injury history. One game into the 2013 regular season, it seems as if Amendola is going to miss his first game as a member of the Patriots.
Amendola suffered a groin injury on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. After the injury, many thought he was done for the day. He returned and contributed to the Patriots offense while gutting out his injury while finishing the afternoon with 10 receptions for 104 yards.
The Boston Herald reported this morning that the Patriots will not have a practice prior to their contest this Thursday night against the New York Jets. Instead, New England is holding a walkthrough this afternoon. The Herald reported this morning that Amendola was not participating.
Then comes news from NFL Media Inside Ian Rapoport this morning that Amendola is “highly unlikely” to play Thursday night due to his groin injury.
This news comes on the heels of yesterday’s news that RB Shane Vereen will be out an undisclosed number of weeks after breaking a bone in his hand. TE Zach Sudfeld will likely miss the game as well due to a hamstring injury. Veteran TE Rob Gronkowski is also likely not to play.
Fantasy football owners of Amendola should make sure to put a claim in on fellow Patriots WR Julian Edleman. Edleman was on the field for 83 of 94 snaps on Sunday.
