The Arizona Cardinals will host the Atlanta Falcons at home this afternoon. Arizona has struggled to run the football this season, averaging just 77 yards per game. Veteran RB Rashard Mendenhall did not practice on Friday while dealing with a toe injury and is expected not to play against the Falcons later this afternoon.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports via Twitter this morning that Mendenhall will not play but rather rookie RB Andre Ellington will get the start against Atlanta.
Ellington is an interesting play for fantasy owners this afternoon. Mendenhall has struggled running the ball this season, averaging just 3.1 yards and has not shown any explosiveness. Ellington is used as a substitution back but is averaging 6.1 yards per carry. Ellington leads the Cardinals with two runs over 20 yards. He also is productive catching passes out of the backfield, logging 20 receptions.
With a strong showing this afternoon, Ellington could replace Mendenhall as the starter moving forward.
