The San Diego Chargers have been surprisingly a very competitive team this year while the Jacksonville Jaguars are dreadful. The Chargers dropped a game to the Oakland Raiders last night but in actuality are just seconds away from being a 4-1 team looking back at the first five games of the regular season. No one really saw that coming this year, except perhaps hardcore Chargers fans. With the Jaguars wandering aimlessly, will they trade RB Maurice Jones-Drew before the NFL trade deadline?
QB Philip Rivers has enjoyed a great resurgence this season. Yes, he had some turnovers last night, but his level of play has increased significantly under the Chargers first-year coaching staff. With Ryan Mathews suffering a concussion last night, should the Chargers think about trading for Jacksonville’s running back?
Yes, some will state that Maurice Jones-Drew has struggled this season while coming off an injury last season. But, have you seen the Jaguars play this season? In the first four games of the season, prior to the return of WR Justin Blackmon, MJD was the only weapon on the team offensively. Neither of these quarterbacks, Chad Henne or Blaine Gabbert scare opposing defenses.
Add MJD to the Chargers backfield with Rivers throwing the ball, teams won’t put 9 men in the box, running lanes open up.
Jones-Drew is in his last year of his contract and will be playing somewhere else next season. Why wouldn’t the Jaguars be interested in getting something, anything in return for him? Mathews is a bust at running back, and MJD has proven that he can catch the ball out of the backfield when he has a quarterback under center. Every season he’s played all 16 games, Jones-Drew has never had less than 40 receptions and has a career high of 62 in 2008.
San Diego needs to bolster their running game. Last evening, the Chargers finished with just 32 yards on 19 carries, a 1.7 yards per carry average.
The Chargers have been a surprise this season. Looking over the remainder of their schedule, this is a team that might put up 9 wins for the remainder of the season and could get into the wildcard race.
For the right price, I’d bring in Maurice Jones-Drew tomorrow.
