The New York Giants have been one of the biggest disappointments of the 2013 season, starting the year winless. A combination of things have contributed to the miserable start as any possibility of postseason play is becoming a distant memory. With many needs across the roster evident and the NFL trade deadline looming, will the Giants be sellers this year? Could WR Hakeem Nicks be the first player to be traded?
The Giants will likely lose Nicks in the offseason via free agency. In the expected weak free agent class in 2014, Nicks could see a financial windfall. New York re-signed Victor Cruz this offseason and with Rueben Randle coming on, the Giants might decide to invest in other position on the roster moving forward.
With many needs, a lost season and Hakeem Nicks like gone next season, why not trade Nicks this year and get something in return for him. The Giants could find suitors for Nicks this year, and actually might get teams into a bidding war, possibly overpaying for his services this year.
Nicks will be affordable for the remainder of the season with the team which acquires him to be on the hook for less than $1.5 million.
The Giants have two more games prior to the trade deadline of October 29th. If they lose another game, it might just be time to cut the losses for the year and move Nicks. Which teams could be interested in Nicks?
Detroit Lions- Calvin Johnson has been struggling with a nagging knee injury and has failed to find a dependable number two receiver. While unlikely to pursue Nicks in free agency given Johnson’s contract, Detroit might be interested in a multi-game rental for this season.
San Francisco 49ers- the Niners look to have moved past their bump in the road earlier in the season, but receiver is still a position of weakness for the team. Michael Crabtree might return in Mid-November, put that’s not a guarantee.
New England Patriots- Rob Gronkowski continues to miss games. Danny Amendola suffered a vicious blow on Sunday and could miss next week’s game as he’s struggled to stay on the field once again this season. The Patriots are going through some growing pains with their young receivers and could really use Nicks.
Baltimore Ravens- This team is really missing WR Anquan Boldin this season compounded by the loss of TE Dennis Pitta. The Ravens brought back aging veteran Brandon Stokley. Baltimore is just one game out of the division lead.
