The Tennessee Titans lost on the field Sunday to the San Francisco 49ers, but they lost their owner, Bud Adams this morning as first reported by the Hearst News Service. According to the source, he has passed of natural causes. Adams was a pioneer in the football world, despite his controversial persona.

Adams was one of the original owners that helped to create the defunct American Football League in the 1960’s. Adams was the original owner of the Houston Oilers, eventually moving the team to Tennessee after the local area would not build a new stadium for the franchise. The Oilers moved after the 1996 season and became the Tennessee Titans.

In a twist of irony, one of Adams’ former head coaches, Bum Phillips, passed on Friday at the same age, 90. Adams issued a statement on Phillips saying, “We are very sad to hear of the passing of Bum Phillips. He meant a great deal to this franchise, the NFL and the city of Houston, and he was instrumental to the Oilers during the ‘Luv Ya Blue’ era.”

In the world of social media, Adams will always be known for this moment when he was signaling fans that they are number one.
