ESPN is reporting this evening that first-year, rookie head coach Rob Chudzinski will be fired this week by the Cleveland Browns. Really? This just adds for chaos to the Browns organization for yet another off season while the Browns hold two first-round picks heading into the 2014 NFL Draft. Chris Mortensen is reporting this news this afternoon on ESPN, but this was also alluded too this morning on the NFL Network by Ian Rapoport.
This is a curious move. I watched the news conference this past offseason when Chudzinski was hired by the Browns, seated right next to owner Jimmy Haslam. He was the coach for the Browns, he was an Ohio boy, Chudzinski stated this was a dream job. Yes, Chudzinski has had a tough year, but so has the Browns owner.
Mortensen seems to think that Chudzinski will be gone as soon as later tonight. Tweets from beat reporters this morning on Twitter reported that just players would be available to the media on Monday morning. That was not a great smoke signal.
It’s unfortunate for Chudzinski, he was saddled with a team that really had no quarterback. He posted an offense which had a record setting receiver this season while catching passes from the likes of Brian Hoyer, Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell. If those three are the measure of your coaching prowess in the NFL, that’s a shame.
Well Browns fans, get ready for yet another rebuilding season. That is really a shame with some very solid key pieces in place right now. Won’t be shocked to see Norv Turner named as the next head coach. Just ask San Diego Chargers fans how great of a job he did out west.
