The NFL 2014 calendar year is less than 2 hours old as the free agency market is in full frenzy. The San Francisco 49ers made the first curious move of the new NFL year. The Niners have traded for Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert. Yes, a team actually traded for Blaine Gabbert.

Various reports suggest that Gabbert has been acquired in exchange for a 6th-round draft pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Yes, San Francisco started the day with 13 draft picks in May of this year, but still, a draft pick for a player that has been the biggest draft bust in recent years? Why not use a draft pick on a rookie quarterback in later rounds? Gabbert’s NFL starting experience counts for very little.

Gabbert has demonstrated very little ability to play at the NFL level. In three seasons, he has 22 touchdowns and 24 interceptions, adding 8 fumbles. His toughness has also been questioned.

Reports have the Niners sending a sixth-round pick in 2014 and some outlets reporting the possibility of a conditional pick in 2015. Yes, I’m shaking my head.

This is not the first questionable move the Niners have made to back up QB Colin Kaepernick. Last season, San Francisco added Colt McCoy. Kaepernick was never injured during the 2013 season, so backup was not a position of concern. McCoy is a free agent and the team has quickly moved on.

San Francisco fans had better hope that Kaepernick goes through another injury free season in 2014.
